Zafra is a historic town in the south of the province of Badajoz, in Extremadura, situated between the plains of Tierra de Barros and the foothills of the Sierra Morena. Its vernacular architecture is characterised by whitewashed houses, narrow streets, wrought-iron balconies, and arcaded squares, while its most significant buildings include the Alcázar-Palace of the Dukes of Feria, now a Parador, the Church of La Candelaria, and the lively Plaza Grande and Plaza Chica. The surrounding countryside is devoted to vineyards, olive groves, cereal cultivation, and livestock farming, with the town historically serving as an important market centre for the agricultural and livestock-producing region around it. Zafra stands out from similar Extremaduran towns because it combines an exceptionally elegant historic centre with a strong commercial tradition, most famously expressed through the annual International Livestock Fair, one of Spain’s most important agricultural fairs, giving the town a lively and distinctive character.
