When planning our journey from Cuenca to Córdoba, we tried to outsmart the sat-nav by entering an intermediate destination that would take us away from the motorway around Madrid. Unfortunately, it turned out that there were two places with the same name, and the sat-nav chose the wrong one. Before we realised what had happened, we found ourselves in the middle of the province of Guadalajara, some two or three hours in the wrong direction. However, we came upon a shepherd and his two small dogs moving a large mixed flock of sheep and goats along the road, the animals spilling across the tarmac and completely bringing us to a halt. The shepherd walked steadily among them, while the flock flowed around him in a constantly shifting mass of white and brown, filling the road and the surrounding landscape with movement. It was a wonderfully unexpected rural scene, and as there was nowhere for us to go, we simply stopped and watched, happily taking photographs until the last of the animals had disappeared along the road. It was exactly the sort of fleeting scene that makes an unplanned detour worthwhile.
