Mota del Marqués - provincia de Valladolid - M1 2026
Mota del Marqués is a small historic town, located within the agricultural landscape of Tierra de Campos. Significant buildings include the ruins of the medieval castle, the Church of San Martín, and the former convent of San Francisco. The surrounding countryside is mainly devoted to cereal farming, especially wheat and barley, along with vineyards and livestock. What makes Mota del Marqués distinctive from similar rural towns is its combination of medieval heritage, Renaissance influences, and its striking hilltop setting, where historic monuments dominate the surrounding plains.
There was something magnificent about the ruined castle standing on top of the hill, the semi-ruined iglesia de El Salvador below it, and, finally, the Baroque church further into the town. Together, these three buildings seemed to tell the story of Simancas itself — a layered history of power, faith and changing fortunes. Each structure represented a different chapter: the castle’s military past, the monastery’s religious importance and decline, and the church’s later expression of Baroque confidence. Even in their varying states of preservation, they created a remarkable sense of continuity with the town’s long and complex history.
