Jimena de la Frontera is a historic hilltop town situated near the foothills of the Los Alcornocales Natural Park. Its vernacular architecture features whitewashed houses, narrow winding streets, tiled roofs, and traditional Andalusian details that reflect its Moorish heritage. Significant buildings include the Castle of Jimena de la Frontera, the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Victoria, and the medieval cave paintings of the surrounding area. The local landscape supports cork oak forests, olive groves, citrus cultivation, and livestock farming, especially within the dehesa system. Jimena de la Frontera is different from similar white villages because it combines Andalusian village character with a rich mix of Islamic, Roman, and medieval history, as well as its unique setting between mountains, forests, and the Strait of Gibraltar.
We had lunch in the town square beneath the clock tower in Jimena de la Frontera, before undertaking the rather arduous climb up to the castle at the top of the hill. It was well worth the effort. The views across the surrounding countryside are spectacular, and standing among the remains of the fortress, you can feel the layers of history that have shaped the town. Roman, Moorish, and Christian influences are all tangible here, each leaving their mark on this remarkable hilltop settlement.
