Grazalema lies in the heart of the Sierra de Grazalema in Cádiz province, surrounded by steep limestone mountains and some of the most dramatic scenery in western Andalusia. The village is typically Andalusian, with whitewashed houses, red-tiled roofs, wrought-iron balconies and narrow, winding streets, with the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Aurora and the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación among its notable buildings. The surrounding countryside supports olives, almonds, grazing sheep and goats, with smallholdings and woodland on the mountain slopes. What sets Grazalema apart is its setting: a compact white village pressed against the limestone peaks, in one of the wettest parts of Spain, giving the landscape an unusually green character.
