Consuegra - provincia de Toledo M1 - 2023
Consuegra is a small town in the province of Toledo, in Castilla-La Mancha, lying amid the open plains of the La Mancha region. Its traditional architecture is typically Castilian, with whitewashed houses, tiled roofs, simple façades and quiet streets, while the town is dominated by the hilltop Castillo de la Muela and its remarkable row of twelve restored windmills. The surrounding landscape is largely agricultural, with extensive cereal cultivation, vineyards, olive groves and saffron production. What makes Consuegra particularly distinctive is this dramatic combination of the medieval castle and line of windmills standing above the vast, open plains of La Mancha, a landscape closely associated with Cervantes and Don Quixote.
This was a flying visit to Consuegra on our way from Conil to Toledo. We stopped at the car park and managed to grab a few photographs of the castle and some of the remarkable line of windmills on the hilltop. We didn’t have time to explore the town itself, but the view from below was impressive enough to make the stop worthwhile.
